Julian de Metz
Co-founder & Director, dMFK Architects
Julian de Metz is a co-founder and director of dMFK Architects, established in 2000 with Paul Forbes and Ben Knight. His early career included working with Moshe Safdie Associates in Boston and ORMS in London, experiences that shaped his approach to collaborative design and adaptive reuse.
Julian’s practice focuses on the reinvention of existing buildings and their contribution to the health and vitality of cities. With over two decades of experience, he has developed a particular expertise in workspace architecture, leading projects for clients including The Office Group, Derwent London, Dorrington, and Landsec. His co leadership was recognised when dMFK was named Building Design’s Office Architect of the Year 2024.
In parallel with practice, Julian contributes to the profession as an RIBA external examiner, part-time lecturer in Professional Practice, and a chair of Barnet’s Quality Review Panel. He enjoys working in challenging contexts, particularly with constrained or overlooked buildings, and is committed to exploring their potential for transformation.
Beyond architecture, Julian is an enthusiastic open-water swimmer and co-organiser of SwiMIPIM, an annual charity event in Cannes supporting Streets of London.
